NASA has announced a two-year mission space mission to explore the infancy and development of the universe. Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer, the newly approved mission, is nicknamed as spheres. The space agency intends to find how common the vital building blocks of life are across our galaxy. The mission will survey hundreds of millions of galaxies using two types of light rays. It will utilize both optical and near-infrared light for the study. The two-year mission funded at $242 million slated to launch in 2023. Although, the pricing does not include launch costs.
Thomas Zurbuchen, the associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said the amazing mission would be a valuable collection of unique data for astronomers. It will offer a unique galactic map revealing the first moments in the universe’s history. Additionally, the outline of the sky will have 96 different color brands. SPHEREx will study the sky at a six-month interval and gather data for more than 100 million stars in the Milky Ways. It will also collect information for 300 million galaxies present in our neighborhood. The mission will look for water and essential building blocks of life in the Milky Way. It will also pinpoint targets for in-depth study for the upcoming missions of NASA.
Researchers will prioritize studying targets of the James Webb Space Telescope and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope depending upon SPHEREx’s data. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine stated that he is very excited about this new mission. James Bock of Caltech in Pasadena, California is the principal researcher of the mission. He will work with NASA’s JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) to create the mission payload. JPL will also control the mission. SPHEREx will not only expand the U.S.’ strong fleet of space-based missions which exclusively uncover the secrets of the universe. It is also a crucial part of an identical science program that involves missions of variable length. NASA announced the mission on the same day it declared demise news of Opportunity rover.
